Welcome

The work of digital scholars can be paradoxical, nebulous, and challenging; however, our contributions to scholarship are rewarding, because we are creating something that is flexible, extensible, and public-facing. Our contribution to scholarship allows those outside the bounds of Gettysburg College to see our work, and also build off of it.

Digital scholarship (also referred to, slightly more narrowly, as digital humanities) is not easy to define because there is no one way to approach it; however, for the purposes of this fellowship, our digital scholarship activity requires us to use digital tools to interpret, analyze, and present original research. This goes beyond writing a paper and putting it on a website. We are creating something that would not be effective as a static, unchanging document.

Over the course of the summer, we will look at various tools, techniques, and philosophies important to digital scholarship. This isn’t just a technology training program; we are here to get in the mindset of being digital scholars, working with design, project management, presentation, and yes, digital tools. Our projects at the end of the fellowship should reflect our emergence into this digital scholarship worldview.

By the end of the summer fellowship, Digital Scholarship Summer Fellows will be able to:

  • identify a range of possible digital scholarship tools to integrate into a public-facing digital scholarship project
  • use collections/materials/artifacts to explore a research question best interpreted through a digital scholarship lens
  • participate in digital scholarship activities as a part of a collaborative cohort to support digital scholarship initiatives at Gettysburg College and beyond
  • reflect upon the process of creating and managing a digital scholarship project to record and evaluate individual progress and identify challenges and best practices for other digital scholars
  • produce documentation and a realistic project timeline to manage, record and track project development
  • communicate personal experience as a Digital Scholarship Fellow to demonstrate the value and opportunities provided by digital scholarship
